BIOGRAPHY.
Mariem Abutaleb (b. 1997, Egypt) holds a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from the American University in Cairo. Her practice explores the expressive possibilities of writing through Arabic script, allowing it to be experienced visually as it moves beyond legibility into rhythm, gesture, and abstract form.
Through black ink, she lets each piece unfold on its own terms, revealing itself as much to her as to those who encounter it. In the process, nothing repeats in quite the same way, and each form retains its own distinct presence.
As readability fades, what emerges is an emotional resonance carried by what goes unread. Freed from literal meaning, the works remain open to multiple interpretations, inviting reflection through perception and feeling. For Mariem, writing speaks differently once it no longer needs to be read.
Her work has been presented internationally, including in Norway, New York, Minneapolis, Belgium, Berlin, Cyprus, Athens, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Beirut, Kuwait, Egypt, and beyond.
